Nature and wildlife are perhaps not the first ideas that spring to mind when you think of a holiday in Oman. You would be surprised!
Dolphin watching trips run daily to the deep waters just off of the Muscat coast and it is very rare to not see pods of 100+ dolphins, bottle nose, spinner dolphin and the common dolphin, are the main ones, and if you are really lucky you may spot a whale shark or even a Humpback whale, Bryde whale or even a Sperm whale.
Below the surface the warm waters of Oman are a scuba diving and snorkelling paradise. Trips run daily.
For bird watching enthusiasts visit between November and February as large numbers of birds avoid flying over the Indian Ocean and use Oman as a land bridge between Asia and Africa on their migratory route. A useful resting point between vast oceans and the long flight ahead. Tick off many of the 468 species on Oman's bird list.
Just a few hours out of Muscat is the Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve where it is possible to see female turtles come ashore to dig their holes and lay their eggs. If we’re lucky we’ll also get a batch of hatchling burrow their way through the sand, reaching the surface they head for the sea by the light of the moon. While it is likely you will see greater numbers of turtles in the hotter, summer months, they do nest all year round.
For those with a more specialist interest Oman also has a lot more to offer.
With wide differences in topography, altitude and weather, there is a wide variety of plants and animals, many of which have adapted to survive in this environment.
Muscat Diving & Adventure Centre runs specialist interest holidays, lead by enthusiastic leaders who are passionate about their subject.
