VIA FERRATA: Jebal Shams – Level 2 Trip
VIA FERRATA: Jebal Shams - Level 2 Trip
Trek 1 ½ hour along a balcony at 2000m, passing the abandoned village of Sap Bani Kamis. This route takes you to the start of a stunning 150m vertical climb which then leads to the best view on Jebel Shams.
Attached to a steal cable via specialised equipment you ascend the original route that the villages once took but with no protection, using wooden pegs and chock stones to assist in their climb. Behind you is the Arabian Grand Canyon (Wadi Gul) with an exposure of over 1000m.
No previous experience is required but you will need a reasonable level of fitness and a head for heights.
4×4 is needed to access the location.
Via ferrata is not typical climbing and you do not need any previous skills other than some upper body strength to enjoy it. This is a reasonably demanding trip, moderate fitness is required.
Suitable trainers (no sandals)
Comfortable clothes (modestly dressed shoulders covered, short down to the knees)
Guides TBC before trip. Lead instructor:
Leave Muscat at 6am or meet Shams Heights at 9am
We start the trip with the ‘Balcony Walk’ around the inside of the Grand Canyon leading us to the abandoned village of Sap Bani Khamis.
Once you have had a look about the village there is a small ascent up the scree slope to meet the bottom of the cliffs.
It’s now time to kit up into our Harnesses and Helmets for the Via ferrata up and out of the Grand Canyon of Oman.
The climb is split into three sections, the first two re divided by a ledge where it’s possible to stop for a photo and to have a drink before continuing up the cliffs.
Once you at the top a short walk reveals another steel cable leading up and over the edge again. Once over the edge it’s time for a quick rest and photo stop before heading out the wadi to the cars.
